Love actually

Finally... a love song that actually makes sense.

Beautiful (and in a lot of ways, practical) lyrics aside, the heavenly singing just adds to the song's charm. Of course they could have done without the sporadic rapping in English and the annoying sms-y title words, but I have a remedy - try singing it in your head with the words "U, me, aur hum" substituted with "Tum, main, aur hum".

Hmm... Apne rang gawaaye bin
Mere rang mein ghul jao
Apni dhoop bujhaaye bin
Meri chhaon mein aa jao

Chalo yun karein
Tum tumhi raho
Main main bhi rahoon
Hum hum hi rahein
Teeno milke saath chalein
Saathi janam janam
U, me, aur hum
U, me, aur hum

Jaise baadal pani ka yarana hai
Jaise gul aur khushbu ka dostana hai
Waise hi rahein hum tum
Waise hi jeeyein hum tum
Tere mere haathon mein
Koi bhi pinjra na ho
Ek duje par apna
Haq toh ho qabza na ho
Har haal mein
Tum tumhi raho
Main main bhi rahoon
Hum hum bhi rahein

Ek din toh woh lamha bhi aana hai
Dono mein se ek ne chale jana hai
Baatein yeh sabhi hum tum
Jaan le abhi hum tum
Dono milke saath mein
Aise jeena seekh le
Taaki jo peeche rahe
Usko na ho mushkilen

Chal yun jeeyein
'Gar main na rahoon
Ya tum na raho
Hum hum hi rahein
Jaise saya saath chale
Saath rahein hardam
U, me, aur hum
U, me, aur hum...

Hmm.. Just if whats mentioned in the last 2 stanzas could be easily followed.. Aah, things would be so easier, simpler then..

#Manju,
:D

#Urv,
Yeah I found those lines really amazing... I don't think any hindi song has dished out such practical and relevant advice as this one! But you must actually listen to the song to feel it. :)

The lyrics are...lovely, for lack of better words. Particularly the first two lines. SO MUCH SENSE!
Like you said, such practical and relevant advice..I haven't seen in any song! :) who's the lyricist? Gulzar?

Even I wanted to do a post abt this song.
Well, with this Munna Dhiman has truly arrived.

Also check out his lyrics for song 'Rozaana' from Nishabd.

Haven't heard this song, need to check it out after your recco, but the lyrics reminded me of (as a warning) this line from Kabir...
"Prem gali ati saankri ta me do na samaye"

#Sanchit,
Ha! Bronze is mine! :D

#Shub,
//Like you said, such practical and relevant advice..I haven't seen in any song! :)

Oh there's one more very old song that gives out practical and relevant advice.

Chhod de sari duniya kisi ke liye
Yeh munaasib nahin aadmi ke liye
Pyaar se bhi zaroori kai kaam hain
Pyaar sab kuchh nahin zindagi ke liye

//who's the lyricist? Gulzar?

Naah, if it was Gulzar, none of us would understand the song! :P It's Munna Dhiman. I think he's inspired by Javed Akhtar - very earthy lyrics. :)

#Indianarchie,
Ah! Sorry! Just for you, here's the translation. Many parts of the song don't translate very well though. :)

Hmm... without losing your colours
Blend into mine
Without losing your sunshine
Come into my shade

Let's do this
You be yourself
I be myself
We be ourselves
The three of us walk together
As partners in every life
You, me and us
You, me and us

Just like the friendship between clouds and rain
Just like the friendship between flowers and fragrance
Let's be just like that
Let's live just like that
Let there be no cage in our hands
Let us have a right over each other
But let us not take each other over
You be yourself
I be myself
We be ourselves

One day that moment will come
One of us will have to go
Let us know and understand this now
Let's learn to live together in a way
That the one who is left behind doesn't face difficulties
Let's live like this
If I am not around
Or you are not around
We still be ourselves
Just like a shadow
We'll always be together
You, me and us
You, me and us

#Stone,
Oh! So he wrote Rozana! The song would have been awesome if AB hadn't sung it! Another potential Roop Kumar Rathod song wasted! :P

#Anshuj,
Yes yes go listen to it! It's gonna play in the bar all of April! :P

//"Prem gali ati saankri ta me do na samaye"

Hahahaha! Man! Kabir was such a dude! :D

Tum, main, aur hum.
Tum, main, aur hum.

Tum, main, aur hum.
Tum, main, aur hum.
Tum, main, aur hum.

Tum, main, aur hum.
Tum, main, aur hum.
Tum, main, aur hum.

LOL.

@Sayesha n Sanchit :: no doubt RKR would have sung it better, but in context of movie I guess it was better in AB's voice...just to maintain that rawness of emotion, that some nervous energy...so it needed a unpolished rough voice.

Btw, these days my fav. is RKR's "Tere sawaalon ke jawab" from Manorama six feet under. First time he has sung at such high pitch.

Bhai, since it is impossible to rationalize 'lou', may be a good lou song should not make sense.....

Sayesha said...

#Sanchit,
You mean this song or Rozaana?

#Vaijayanta,
Okay bouncer throw this chap out, bahut chhad gayi hai isko! :D

#Shan,
Got both comments in my email. You're welcome. :)

#Stone,
Hmmm... I suppose so. But they could have done an RKR version too yeah? But then I guess AB would have really heard it, literally and otherwise! :P :P :P

//Btw, these days my fav. is RKR's "Tere sawaalon ke jawab" from Manorama six feet under.

Man... I LOVE THAT SONG!! Used to listen to it on loop on the way to work sometime ago. :)

#sd,
Hmmm... tumhari baat toh solid hai. I guess different people define 'lou' differently. This song is closest to my definition. :)

Yup, great song! And yeah, they could have done away with the english rap but i have no problems with u, me aur hum....it's cuter that tum, main aur hum! :P
Great work here by all three, Shreya, Munna Dhiman and Vishal Bhardwaj!
Loved your translation too :)
